Ph.D. student Molli Spalter nominated for Pushcart Prize

Molli Spalter, a second year PhD student in Literature and Cultural Studies, has been nominated for the prestigious Pushcart Prize for her poem “A Love Letter To My Son.” The award, given by the publishing house Pushcart Press, honors literary works published in magazines and the small press over the past year. Past winners have included such legendary authors as Kathy Acker, Raymond Carver, and Junot Díaz.

Nominations for the Pushcart Prize come from editors across the world, who are allowed to submit up to six works of poetry, short stories, or other forms of literary writing. Winners of the prize are featured in an anthology called The Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses, which has been published annually since the founding of the award in 1976. Kirkus Reviews has praised the anthology as “Must reading for anyone interested in the present and future of America’s letters,” while the Detroit working-class poet Philip Levine once said that “I hope the Pushcart Prize lives forever.” This year, the prizes will be announced in early November 2018, when Pushcart Press publishes its next anthology.

Molli’s nominated poem “A Love Letter To My Son” was published in the January 2017 issue of Rogue Agent Journal, a poetry magazine that “wants to share your stories about the poem that is the body.” Her creative work, which Molli calls a poetics of “womaning” and mothering, has also appeared in the literary journal Rust + Moth

In addition to writing for magazines, Molli also teaches writing courses to students, including a current course that emphasizes community-based writing practices, and writing and social justice. Her research interests include 20th and 21st century transnational women’s literature, concerns of ethical representation, and trauma studies. Currently, Molli says that she is “most interested in the radical possibilities of the selfie, as a means of writing the self.”
