Interdisciplinary Studies Program

For the last several years the University has addressed the issue of interdisciplinary studies by way of offering integrated studies degrees, first through an individual department and then through a program within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.  However, recognition of the interdisciplinary nature of many specific subjects has become widespread, and an orientation to "other" subjects, methods of research, and points of view has become a part of many traditional disciplines and modes of instruction.  Thus, the interdisciplinary mission of the University is now handled by several subject-specific departments, and the ISP faculty have joined these units.

As of January 2008, no new students are being admitted to the Interdisciplinary Studies Program.  As of Fall term 2009, the IS  Program will discontinue offering courses, with the following three exceptions:  ISP 4860 Senior Seminar II; ISP 8998 Master’s Thesis Seminar I; and ISP 8999 Master’s Thesis Seminar II.  Those students currently pursuing ISP undergraduate and graduate degrees will be served by the remaining ISP staff and are encouraged to complete their degrees.  Students must contact their advisor to discuss course substitutions for degree completion requirements.

The ISP office is located in room 1261 of the Faculty/Administration Building (campus map).  Advisors (Howard Finley, Director; Roberta DeMeyer; and Derrick White) are available to students already in the program for advising and questions related to their plans of work and progress toward degrees.  Please call 577-0832 to make an appointment.
