John Corvino is honored for teaching

Date: 5/25/2012

Philosophy professor John Corvino describes his approach to teaching as "ordinary and old- fashioned." But that approach, which includes a lot of direct interaction with students, is also award -winning.

The Presidents Council of State Universities of Michigan has selected Corvino as a Michigan Distinguished Professor of the Year. The program recognizes outstanding contributions made to undergraduate students at Michigan's 15 public universities.

"I'm both pleased and surprised," Corvino says. "Pleased, because teaching is such an important part of my life."

In his nomination of Corvino, a student wrote, "He has had a huge impact on my life. He sparked my interest in philosophy when I was a freshman, and he has now helped me decide that I want to pursue a career in academia."

Corvino will be recognized with three other public university professors May 10 at a Lansing luncheon.

Corvino has taught at Wayne State since 1998, and has received both a Career Development Chair and the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching. As a philosophy professor, he strives to help students develop philosophical thinking and effective communication skills.

"Employers of all stripes want critical thinkers who can adapt to rapidly changing fields, and they want people who can express themselves clearly," Corvino says.
