Information and Application Procedure

Overview of awards

The Psychology department will award two (2) undergraduate scholarships for the 2017 – 2018 academic year. Each award is worth up to $2000.

The award is based on a combination of criteria including academic performance, service, and commitment to the discipline.

The Undergraduate Committee of the Department of Psychology established this award, serves as the scholarship award committee, and administers the Undergraduate Research and Travel Fund from which the scholarship is drawn.

Students who are graduating at the end of the Fall 2017 semester are eligible to apply for a $1000 scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Applicants must have declared Psychology as their major. Dual majors are acceptable.
  2. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA overall.
  3. Minimum attendance requirements:  Students must maintain full-time status (12 credit hours or more) during the Fall 2017 Semester and at least part time status (6-11 credit hours) during the Winter 2018 semester.
  4. Students graduating during the tenure of the award may still apply.

The application deadline is 5 PM on Friday, March 10, 2017.

The application consists of 5 items: 

  1. The application cover page.
  2. A resume or curriculum vita.
  3. Academic transcripts (copies from Academica are acceptable).
  4. A written statement that addresses your academic and/or career goals, including how the Psychology major factors into your future plans and any other information that is relevant.
  5. Two letters of recommendation, one of which must be written by a WSU psychology department faculty or staff member.  Recommendation letters should not be provided from family members. Letters must be emailed from the letter writer to the Chair of the Undergraduate Committee, Dr. Woodard at

Announcement and distribution of awards

Awards will be announced prior to the annual Lachman Lecture held by the Department of Psychology. The Lachman Lecture is scheduled for April 12, 2017 from 12 noon to 2 pm. Winners will be notified in advance of the lecture and will be asked to attend the lecture to be recognized for the award. The award will be distributed to the recipient in two checks of $1000 each. One check will be disbursed prior to the Fall 2017 semester and the other at the beginning of Winter 2018 provided that the student has maintained full-time status for Fall 2017 and is enrolled at least part-time for Winter 2018 semester. There are no restrictions on how the applicant can spend the award.
