Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861), known as the Bard of Ukraine, influenced not only his contemporaries but also all subsequent generations of Ukrainians through his lyrical, patriotic, and highly emotional poetry.
His vision of an independent and glorious Ukraine became a leading factor in the emancipation movement of the 19th century and the struggle for nationhood through the 20th century.
