The Madden ProjectSite Name:St. Anne's Cemetery I and II (aka The Madden Project, Wayne Historic #3) WSUMA Accession Nos.:2802 Site No.:20WN258 (aka: WN-H3) Excavated By:C. Stephen Demeter Excavation Year(s):1987 Site Description:St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church was founded in Detroit on July 26, 1701. It is the second oldest parish in the United States, having served the community for over 300 years. While the actual building has undergone several reconstructions, St. Anne's Cemetery I and II were in continuous use for 116 years. St. Anne's Cemetery I began in 1701 and was used until 1760. Its location is within the area bounded by Griswold, Larned, Jefferson, and Shelby in Detroit . Its actual size is unknown, though it is estimated to be about an acre. St Anne's Cemetery II was used between 1755 and 1817. It was within 100 feet of St. Anne's Cemetery I and its dimensions were approximately 150 feet east to west by 200 feet north to south. On May 1, 1817 St. Anne's Cemeteries I and II were closed and the remains were moved to the new cemetery. However, only the graves that were marked were moved to the new location. The John Madden Company donated all other artifacts found at the site to the Wayne State University Museum of Anthropology in May of 1988. Artifacts:
