Site Description:

Summer Island is located in the oulet of Green Bay into Lake Michigan , just south of Point Detour in Delta County, Michigan. The island has Middle and Late Woodland occupations as well as a historic component. Excavation of the historic period occupation took place at Site F, located just north of the prehistoric component of Summer Island , about 200 yards inland from Summer Harbor . Based on historical documents the site is believed to have been a small fishing village which was a branch of the St. Martin 's Inland fishing fleet in the 1800's and occupied as such until at least 1898. The village was also occupied in the late 1800's and early 1900's by loggers from Fayette. There are four known structures at Site F consisting of two houses, a boarding house, and a root cellar.
