The 2019 CLAM Conference  will be held at the WSU McGregor Center on Saturday, November 9 from 8:30 AM to 4 PM

The WSU-CI founded CLAM: Chinese Language Association of Michigan to provide a forum for K-16 educators and advocates of Chinese-language and culture in the state of Michigan and beyond. The organization is dedicated to the improvement of Chinese language teaching and learning and to the professional developments of its members. CLAM holds an annual conference each November.
2018 CLAM Keynote Speaker: Dr. Myriam Met
Title: Teaching Chinese Culture: Why? What? How?
Unlike language, a curriculum or syllabus that develops intercultural skills is not readily available. While broadly stated standards and guidance regarding intercultural communication is available from professional organizations, teachers are frequently left to answer curriculum questions, such as “What will be taught?” “Why will it be taught?” “How will it be taught?” and “How will students be assessed?”
In this talk, we’ll examine possible answers to some of these questions for teachers of Chinese at all levels of instruction, along with some instructional approaches that can help students move toward intercultural competence.
Dr. Myriam Met is a well-known consultant on the teaching of foreign languages. After leaving the University of Maryland in 2008, where she was Acting Director at the National Foreign Language Center (NFLC), Dr. Met  became a supervisor of foreign language programs for major urban and suburban school districts, initiating and overseeing a variety of innovative programs, including elementary and secondary school Chinese programs.  Her current work focuses on support for K-12 programs for language learners, particularly immersion in a variety of languages. Additionally, she was the founder and first president of the National Association of District Supervisors of Foreign Languages; a founding member, and later president, of the National Network for Early Language Learning; and served on the Executive Council of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
