Sherylyn Briller

Sherylyn H. Briller is a medical anthropologist who specializes in the anthropology of aging and death and dying. She has a longstanding interest in cross-cultural gerontology and has conducted research in Asia and in the United States. Her dissertation research examined familial and governmental old age support mechanisms as well as the impact of rapid societal change on the elderly in Mongolia.

In the United States, Dr. Briller has significant experience conducting research in long term care and hospital settings. She worked on several large-scale research projects focusing on ways to create more supportive environments for persons with dementia and co-authored the four volume series Creating Successful Dementia Care Settings, Health Professions Press, 2002). Much of Dr. Briller’s current research program focuses on end-of-life issues. With colleagues, she co-edited the volume End-of-Life Stories: Crossing Disciplinary Boundaries, Springer, 2005). As an applied anthropologist, Dr. Briller has published, consulted and spoken to numerous audiences including academics, policymakers, healthcare staff, and consumers about dementia care and palliative care. She is a Fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology and President-Elect of the Association for Anthropology and Gerontology Education.

Dr. Briller is highly interested in the career development of anthropologists and the role of anthropological education in the formation of professional identities. She coauthored the forthcoming book Designing An Anthropological Career: Professional Development Exercises, AltaMira, 2008).
