About Zhuqing’s research:

 

Cardiolipin plays a role in many essential cellular functions, from mitochondrial fusion, protein import, and bioenergetics, to iron homeostasis, mitigation of oxidative stress, and cell division. Recent studies suggest that cardiolipin may be a major physiological modifier of the Barth syndrome phenotype. Barth syndrome (BTHS) is a rare x-linked disorder primarily characterized by cardio-skeletal myopathy.

 

The focus of my research is to elucidate how cardiolipin functions in cell division and genome stability, which may have important implications for understanding the pathology of BTHS. As there is currently no effective way to cure BTHS, this knowledge may allow clinicians to employ novel treatment strategies, including targeted genome editing.

I graduated from medical school in China, where I worked on a spermatogenesis research project focusing on the highly conserved Dazl gene. I also have many hobbies outside of research. In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, kayaking, and hanging out with my friends. I love discovering the beauty of nature!
