Students dance the night away @ second Winter Ball

CMLLC’s second annual Winter Ball, held Friday, January 27 in the Student Center’s sparkling new ballroom, was an energetic international celebration of food, music, dance, and conviviality.

The evening began with a buffet featuring food from around the world. Next, organizers broke the ice by emerging from the crowd flash-mob style to perform the “Detroit Hustle,” also known as the Electric Slide, to Stevie Wonder’s “My Eyes Don’t Cry.” In the hours to follow, participants learned a contemporary interpretation of the Polish foxtrot; they practiced an Austrian waltz, and learned to salsa dance and bachata; they enjoyed a Russian accordion performance and a playlist of contemporary French music by Stromae; they did an Italian line dance, and even found time for the wobble. A trunk full of costumes from around the world provided props for hundreds of photographs.

The evening’s fun was made possible by the Global Language Forum, an organization containing representatives from the Polish Club, Circolo Italiano, Club Hispano, Deutschklub, Slavic Klub, and Cercle Francais. This year, the Latin Social Club joined the organizational team; Global Studies provided pizza; the English Language Institute provided decorations and student volunteers; and the Chinese program brought colorful costumes for the photo booth.

Classical and Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures is proud to celebrate the diverse musical and culinary traditions of the many countries where its fourteen languages are spoken. Stay tuned for the third annual Winter Ball in January 2018!
