If you have studied French prior to taking courses in the Basic French sequence, you should take the French Placement Test.  The Placement Test assess your ability to speak, write and comprehend French, as well as your ability to use French grammar.  You do not have to study before taking the Placement Test; the goal of the test is to assess your proficiency and determine which French course is best for you.

You must take the Placement Test in the Foreign Language Technology Center (385 Manoogain Hall).   Please make an appointment to take the test, either in person or by phone (313.577.3022).  The cost of the placement test is $10.00.  You must present a photo ID when you arrive to take the test.  You can expect to receive the results of your test within one week of the date of your examination.  Results may be obtained in the main office of the Department of Classical & Modern Languages, Literatures & Cultures (487 Manoogian Hall, 313.577.3002).
If you are currently enrolled in a basic French course (1010, 1020, 2010), but feel you are in the wrong class, you may take the placement test free of charge during the first two weeks of the semester.  Please ask your instructor for a copy of the Fee Waiver form.  Please note that your instructor must sign the form in order to have the $10.00 fee waived.  After the first two weeks of the semester, you must pay the $10.00 feel to take the Placement Test.
