Why Choose the Wayne State Slavic Program?

The WSU Slavic Program combines academics with hands-on activities, study abroad, and internship programs to bring Slavic cultures alive for Wayne State students. Our students enjoy a dynamic learning environment based on close interaction with the faculty, collaboration among students, and links to local and international Slavic communities. We welcome those who are looking for a stimulating program where students are able to participate in crafting their own learning experience, while simultaneously being challenged by high academic standards.

Wayne State offers a Major in Slavic Studies with concentrations in Polish and Russian. Students in either concentration choose either a second-language or an interdisciplinary focus. There are also minors in Polish and Russian. Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian are taught along with courses in literature, film, and culture. Students also have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of extracurricular events, such as weekly Polish and Russian conversation groups, special lectures, workshops (such as egg-painting), movies, and outings to local Slavic restaurants. Our energetic Slavic Club is actively involved in organizing cultural events and scholarship fund-raising. We are currently developing learning communities – small groups of students that meet regularly to provide social and academic support, discuss Slavic topics, go on outings, engage with the community, and maintain close contact with faculty.
