Andrea Sankar is a professor in the WSU Department of Anthropology and director of the Medical Anthropology Program. She is an adjunct faculty member in the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and in the Institute of Gerontology at Wayne State University. For the last 15 years she has conducted research on community-based care. These were multidisciplinary projects focusing on the de-institutionalization of health care and the increased sophistication of health care delivered at home. Since 1995 her research has focused on the cultural meaning and social impact of HIV on sero-positive African Americans and their families. She is currently the principal investigator in an interdisciplinary study of HIV+ African Americans who are taking anti-retroviral medication that is funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. In the past she has received funding from the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute of Aging. She recently completed six years as a study section member for the Division of Research Grants, four years as a reviewer and two years as a study section chair.
Dr. Sankar is author of numerous scholarly articles, one book, two edited books, and training manuals as well as several consulting reports. In 1999 she co-authored the "Focus of HIV" museum exhibit. In 2000 she secured the Presidential Service Award for her work in co-organizing the "Community Health Forum Section Series". In 1995 she was named Michiganian of the Year for her work in HIV and her teaching. In 1994 she received the University Mentor Award. She has been interviewed on National Public Radio, All Things Considered, The Terry Gross Show, and by Newsweek.
