Scholarships

In addition to obtaining financial aid through the WSU Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, English majors may apply for scholarships housed in the English Department and distributed exclusively to majors in English Studies in the College of Liberal Arts. We offer multiple scholarships from each of six scholarship funding sources. Amounts, number of scholarships, and application deadlines vary from year to year.

PEARL APPLEBAUM WARN ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP is open to returning full- or part-time students age 27 years and older, with high scholastic achievement and demonstrated financial need.

DORETTA BURKE SHEILL ENDOWED MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is for full or part-time junior, senior and graduate students in English who demonstrate financial need and high scholastic achievement, character and leadership.

GILBERT R. AND PATRICIA K. DAVIS ENDOWED MERIT SCHOLARSHIP is open to part-time students majoring in English in the College of Liberal Arts, with an HPA of 3.0 or above, and a minimum of 15 hours in residence at WSU. Recipients must be Michigan residents.

ALBERT FEIGENSON SCHOLARSHIP is for full-time undergraduate and graduate students in English or Music who maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point and demonstrate financial need. Amounts vary.

LOUGHEAD-ELDREDGE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS IN CREATIVE WRITING is for undergraduate and graduate students in English registered for at least six credit hours per term. Three scholarships are available each academic year and are awarded to students with clearly defined creative writing goals.

THE ELIZABETH STONE SCHOLARSHIP IN ENGLISH has been recently established for single parents pursuing degrees in English through the College of Liberal Arts. Students may be enrolled full time or part time at the undergraduate level.  Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement and financial need.

STEPHEN H. TUDOR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN CREATIVE WRITING is for full or part-time undergraduate and graduate English students who demonstrate high academic achievement in creative writing.

JOSEPH J. AND MARY E. YELDA ENDOWED MERIT SCHOLARSHIP FOR ENGLISH is open to full-time students who attended a Detroit metropolitan high school, are majoring in English in the College of Liberal Arts, and have an HPA of 3.0 or higher. Awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need.

THE DUSTIN ROSE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was established to recognize scholastic achievement, to encourage continued progress, and to provide assistance to students in financing their English program through the College of Liberal Arts.  Students may be enrolled full time or part time at the undergraduate level.  Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement

Further scholarship information and application forms are available through the English Department at 5057 Woodward. All applications are to be turned in to the English Department by 5:00 PM on their respective due dates.

In addition to the application form, you will need to provide a cover letter describing your suitability for the desired scholarship, a current transcript, and a letter of support from a faculty member in the English Department.
