M.A. Program in

 Industrial/Organizational Psychology


Description

This program is designed for students interested in pursuing advanced training in applied workplace psychology. This includes (a) job analysis and the development and validation of personnel selection and performance appraisal systems, (b) the implementation and evaluation of employee and management training and development programs, (c) enhancing employee motivation and morale, and (d) related activities that employ psychological principles and practices to increase organizational effectiveness.

 Unlike the Master of Arts with a Major in Psychology, this program is NOT a transitional stage leading to doctoral degree candidacy.

Admission to this program is contingent upon admission to the Graduate School. Students may enter this program in the fall, winter, or spring/summer semester. Application deadlines are as follows: Fall semester -- June 15; Winter semester -- October 15; and Spring/Summer semester -- March 15.

 

Degree Requirement

The Master of Arts in Industrial/Organizational Psychology is offered only with a Plan C option: 30 credits of coursework with no thesis or essay.

Admission Requirements

Students may apply to enter the program in either the Fall, Spring/Summer, or Winter semesters. The application deadline for Fall is June 15; Winter, October 15; and Spring/Summer, March 15. Plan to complete the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) early enough for us to have the scores for the appropriate deadline date. To be admitted, students should meet the following requirements:

  • A minimum upper division (junior & senior) cumulative grade point average of 3.00.
  • A course in introductory psychology
  • A course in statistics
  • Scores on the general portion of the Graduate Record Exam or GMAT test taken within five years of application. Test Scores

  • Either the GRE or GMAT exams are required for admission. Scores are valid for 5 years.
  • Official GRE scores MUST be submitted by the Educational Testing Service to institution code R1898. 
  • Please note: GMAT score must be mailed directly to the Psychology Department, otherwise they will be forwarded to the Business School.


Personal Statement

  • A one- or two-page personal statement addressed to "Graduate Committee Chairperson," describing your areas of interest in psychology and your career plans.
  • If you are unable to submit your personal statement online, then it should be sent directly to the Psychology Department.

Writing Sample

  • A writing sample is optional for the Psychology Department. Writing samples may include one of the following: Senior Thesis, conference presentation, or publication. NO LONGER THAN 5 PAGES

Recommendation Letters

  • Two letters of recommendation completed by professors or other persons who know you and your academic work sufficiently well to judge your qualifications for graduate study.
  • If you are unable to submit Letters of Recommendation online, then they should be sent directly to the Psychology Department. Please attach the Recommendation Cover Letter to the front, and send them in an envelope sealed and signed by the recommender.
