Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some of our most frequently asked questions. Answers can be found by clicking on the questions below. If you have a question that we have not answered here, give us a call.
Who will tutor me? It depends on when your appointment is and what class you are currently taking. We have undergraduate tutors that work with students in 3000 level courses and below, and graduate student tutors that can tutor everyone.
How long are sessions? What happens if I am late? Tutoring sessions run 30-45 minutes and start every hour on the hour. You need to be in the writing center within 15 minutes of the hour in order to keep an appointment (or specify when you make it that you will be late). After this time period has lapsed, we begin taking walk-ins.
My paper is not for a composition course. Can I still see a tutor? Yes! While we may not be able to get into the specifics of your discipline, the peer tutors can assist students working in a wide range of disciplines with the structure of argument, analysis, and description. We can help with any writing assignment that is from a WSU course, including assisting creative writers and students in technical writing courses.
Can I get help with grammar and punctuation? Yes and no. Tutors will address any questions you have, but they are not proof-readers or copy-editors. Our aim is to help students develop self-editing strategies, which, of course, may include grammar.
What should I bring to the session? Bring your draft in electronic or printed format, information about your assignment such as an assignment sheet or rubric from your teacher, something to make notes with, questions, an an enthusiasm to write.
My teacher asked me to go to the Writing Center, what do I do? You should start by making an appointment. Even if you are required to come we cannot guarantee you an appointment unless you call and make one. Additionally, you should expect to be asked to work hard with the tutor even if you are coming in "just for the stamp."
