Research
There are many exciting areas of research in the I/O Psychology program. Students and faculty work together to develop different programs of study. Students are encouraged to work with different faculty members throughout their graduate career. Below are the descriptions of current areas of research.
Computer-Mediated Communication
- Differences in decision quality and in patterns of influence between different organizational communications media (e.g., video conferencing, face-to-face meetings, email, etc.)
- Investigations of the effects of communications media on the accuracy of library reference services
Leadership and Culture
- Examination of the relationship between individual demographic characteristics and preferences for leader style and organizational form
- Examination of the impact of societal culture on leadership style and leadership preferences
Multi-level Data Analysis
- Exploration of problems inherent in analyzing organizational data from multiple countries/cultures
- Organizational/Psychological Climate
Organizational Climate
- Climate for technology implementation
- Climate for ethical behavior and decision-making
Performance Appraisal and Feedback
- Individual differences and biases in evaluations of job performance.
- Efficacy of an intervention designed to reduce racial/gender biases in performance evaluations
Personnel Selection and Retention
- Incremental validity of non-cognitive factors in predicting intellectual performance
- Design and efficacy
Organizational Behavior
- Antecedents to prosocial (organizational citizenship behavior) and antisocial (counterproductive work behaviors) workplace activities
- The role of individual differences (such as race, gender, personality), emotions, and attributions in organizational behavior
- Victimization/emotional abuse in the workplace
Careers
- The role of diversity in the workplace attitudes (such as job satisfaction) and outcomes (such as promotion)
- Methods of improving mentoring, including training and matching
- Antecedents and outcomes of job stress of university-level student retention programs
- Applications of multi-dimensional scaling and cluster analysis to profiling entry-level participants in complex organizations
