Scholarships & Financial Aids
All Ph.D. students admitted to this department receive financial support from the Graduate School. Students admitted to M.S. and M.S. Biotechnology may also receive support based on the availability of funds. Those individuals who are awarded support receive part-time pay as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, including health and dental benefits as well as ten credit hours of paid tuition each semester.
Requirements
Admission to the Ph.D., M.S., and M.S. Biotechnology programs occurs once per year in the Fall Term only. The Graduate School requires applicants to have a GRE score of at least 1000 on the Verbal and Quantitative portions of the test, and a minimum of 3.0 on the Writing Assessment. The minimum TOEFL for international students is 550 (213 computer-based or 79/120 internet-based). However, these minimum requirements are only a guide and do not determine admission. Our Graduate Committee reviews each application individually and takes into account other factors such as letters of recommendation, transcripts, personal statement, and research experience.
The following documents need to be submitted along with your application:
* Curriculum vitae (CV) and Personal Statement
* Three letters of recommendation/two letters for M.A. (printed on official institution letterhead/stationery)
* Official transcripts/degree certificates from University/Universities attended
* GRE (general) test score report (not required for M.A. applicants)
* TOEFL score report (international applicants)

Deadline
The deadline for submission of international applications for Fall Term admission is March 1st of the same year. Domestic applications are accepted through April 1st. Please be aware that it takes time to prepare applications for review. Submitting the online application before March or April 1st does not constitute meeting the deadline. All supporting documents must be in this office by the appropriate deadline date. While the application deadlines for foreign and domestic applicants are March and April 1, respectively, early applications are reviewed beginning in January. Offers of admission are made on a rolling decision basis. Therefore, it is in the best interest of student to apply early in the year.
Applicants to the Master of Arts program in Biological Sciences may be admitted during Fall or Winter Term. Graduate studies do not begin in Spring/Summer. Applications should be submitted at least four weeks before the start of the desired semester. Most students in this program are self-supported; however, if the need arises for additional Graduate Teaching Assistants, funding may be offered. To be eligible to apply to this program, applicants must have done well in undergraduate biology courses.

The application fee for all graduate applicants is $50 (payable in US funds), is non-refundable, and should be submitted electronically with your on-line application at time of submission. American Express, Discover, MasterCard and Visa credit cards are accepted as are bank debit cards and electronic checks. All checks should be made payable to “Wayne State University”. Be sure to include your name in the memo section, where possible. The application fee is valid for four consecutive academic terms. Fees are subject to change without notice.
