Abstract: Russell objected to Meinong's view about nonexistent objects on the grounds that it entails that some objects can't be counted. Recently, Anthony Everett objected to Kripke's and van Inwagen's view about fictional characters on the grounds that it entails that some objects can't be counted. That's the counting objection. I argue that several replies to the counting objection face one version or another of the arbitrariness problem: that there's no reason for preferring one answer to "How many of those objects are there?" over another.
