The Maccabees Building (5057 Woodward). This building is one of many in the area designed by Albert Kahn in the 1920s. The Psychology Department is on the 7th and 8th floors. The Lone Ranger radio program was broadcast from this building beginning in 1933. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Leonard Simons Buiding was also designed by Albert Kahn. This building houses the Psycholinguistics Laboratory, as well as most of the other labs in the Department of Psychology and the Wayne State University press.

|
Science Hall houses the Psychology Department's Teaching Lab. We have about two dozen computers in the lab, along with equipment used for our undergraduate lab courses (Perception; Cognitive; Learning).

Directly across the street from Science Hall is our signature building. Originally Detroit Central High School, Old Main underwent a complete renovation a few years ago. It houses many of our administrative offices, and also has classrooms.
|
|
Shapero Hall houses our lab for teaching Statistics classes. It has been featured in architecture books, not always in a flattering way, because of its unusual design. Students sometimes refer to it as the "upside-down wedding cake."

About 100 steps from Shapero is the McGregor Memorial Conference Center, designed by Minoru Yamasaki. Yamasaki is most famous for having designed the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York.

Across the street from the Simons Building are St. Paul's and First Congregational, two of the many architecturally and historically impressive churches in Detroit. A five-mile stretch of Woodward Ave. is known locally as "Piety Row" because of the many big beautiful churches lining the road.

Housed within the DIA is the Detroit Film Theater. It is a wonderful old 1200-seat theater from the Golden Age of movie houses, and has been beautifully restored. Click here for the DFT film schedule.

Across the street from the Maccabees Building is the Detroit Public Library. Barack Obama held a rally here on 9/28/08. Hollywood types even showed up.

The Renaissance Center, world headquarters of GM, is also visible.

Orchestra Hall is a 10-minute walk down Woodward Avenue
