Graduate Degrees and Certificates
Master of Arts
- 35 credit hours in History
- Only one core course, HIS 7830 - Methods and Research in History, to provide maximum flexibility to adapt the program to fit your specific career goals
- Three options for degree:
- Plan A - 27 hours of coursework plus a thesis (8 hours)
- Plan B - 32 hours of coursework plus and essay (3 hours)
- Plan C - 35 hours of coursework plus an examination in the major field
- A number of fields available for concentration, including a new field in world history

Doctor of Philosophy
- We offer a strong doctoral program with a variety of fields, including transnational work
- Wayne State University is a leading research institution
- The WSU Library System ranks 48th of the top 100 research libraries in the nation
- The Reuther Archives, established in 1960, is one of the premier archives of American labor history and affiliated social movements
- The Burton Collection of the Detroit Public Library system, is a nationally-recognized research center for the history of Michigan and the Midwest
- The Louise Lovett Wright Research Library of the Wright Museum of African American History is a new and growing collection for scholars in the field of African American history, featuring a concentration on regional history and a growing collection of oral histories
- Students take a total of 90 credit hours, thirty of which are concentrated in dissertation research and writing

Joint J.D./M.A. Program
- Students earn both a Juris Doctor and a Masters in History through a coordinated program that only requires one additional semester beyond that of the J.D.
- Students must be admitted to the Law School before applying for the joint program

Joint M.A./M.L.I.S. Program
- Students earn both a Masters in History and a Masters of Library and Information Sciences degree through a coordinated program.
- Instead of taking 35 credit hours for the M.A. in History and another 36 credits hours for the M.L.I.S. for a total of 71 hours, students in this program are able to double-count 14 credit hours and receive both degrees with 57 hours of coursework - a significant tuition savings.

Joint M.A./M.Ed. Program
- Students earn both a Masters in History and a Masters of Social Studies Education through a coordinated program.
- Instead of taking 65 total credit hours for both programs, students in this program will complete both degrees with 52 hours of coursework.
- Students must be admitted to both the College of Education and the Department of History.

Graduate Certificate in Archival Administration
- Conforms to program guidelines set by the Society of American Archivists
- 15 credit hours in graduate-level courses in Archival Administration
- Includes a practicum in archival practice

Graduate Bridge Certificate in World History
- 15 credit hours in graduate-level courses in World History
- Includes a seminar in World History
- Includes 12 hours of courses with continental distribution
- May include transnational coursework
