Student Leadership in SEED Wayne

Student Leadership is central to SEED Wayne's ongoing work and its success. Student volunteers are involved in all SEED Wayne projects.

Students have proposed and are implementing several projects already. These include:

  1. Coordinating the Warrior Demonstration Garden volunteers and weekly work days. Kevin Griffin (kev.griffin@hotmail.com) is the Garden Team Coordinator.
  2. A compendium of composting related resources at Wayne State University, assembled by Heather Marie Harrison, student of Libary and Information Science and president of SOLIS (Student Organizations of Library and Information Science).
  3. Peer-learning workshops on a variety of topics, including vermi-composting and a cooking demonstration for healthy, local meals. The vermicomposting workshop, offered on Friday, November 14 2008, was led by SEED Wayne member, Julia Sosin (juliasosin@gmail.com ) and SEED Wayne Student Leader, Will Ahee(w.ahee@wayne.edu).  The cooking demonstration workshop (January 21, 2009), in which Executive Chef Alison Costello of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen demonstrated how to make healthy, locally sourced food, by cooking up a cauliflower steak on a bed of quinoa. The workshop was co-sponsored by SEED Wayne and the Food and Nutrition Club (FAN) at WSU.  On March 27, 2009, a rain barrel construction workshop was also offered in co-sponsorship by SEED Wayne and SEAL.
  4. Classroom projects for credit, in UP 5999: Cities and Food. Several student proposals completed in Winter 2008 are now being implemented as part of SEED Wayne projects.
