Community Engagement
As part of our outreach mission, CBS is actively engaged with the Detroit metropolitan community. CBS
- Promotes Latino advancement to enrich diversity within our society.
- Builds and maintains links with the Latino and larger metropolitan community as part of the university's urban mission. CBS has:
- Facilitated the creation of the Detroit Latino Agenda and Coalition (DLAC) in 1990 to stimulate the coordination of human and other resources
- Assisted Wayne State University's Office of Equal Opportunity in the creation of the annual Latino Issues Conference based on the Detroit Latino Agenda.
- Contributed to the establishment of the Academy of the Americas, one of the Detroit Public Schools of choice.
- Piloted a K-8 Pathways to Success Program with local schools.
- Sponsored occasional programs at the Bowen branch of the Detroit Public Library.
Collaborations
We also collaborate with Wayne State University and local organizations to to promote the Center and the University.
The staff cosponsors or programs approximately seven events annually that fall into the category of educational and cultural programming. We also attend and support several annual community events.
Additionally, the Center has representation in various committees, such as the Hispanic Heritage Committee that plans and implements a yearly Hispanic Education conference on the Wayne State campus and the Mayor Advisory Committee. We are members of National organizations such as the IUPLR.
On an annual basis the Center's advisors attend numerous recruitment meetings in which they go to schools and talk to students in an effort to recruit them.
We hope to continue providing a forum for education on the cultural traditions, needs and challenges of Latinos throughout this country.
