Assistantships
Teaching Assistantships The department is alloted Teaching Assistantships by the university each year. Because TAs are eligible for renewal up to a total of three years, in some years the department may not appoint any new TAs. Normally, TAs are selected from students pursuing a doctoral degree. Assistantships include a stipend, tuition scholarship for up to 10 hours of graduate study per term, and health insurance. Stipend amounts depend upon prior experience and whether assistants hold an M.A. A TA is expected to teach, grade, proctor, and perform other pedagogical activities, while enrolling in a minimum of six credits of graduate work each term.
Graduate Research Assistantships Individual faculty members may receive awards enabling them to employ Graduate Research Assistants for a single 9- or 12-month appointment; these are sometimes renewed for additional years. A GRA will receive stipends (amounts vary), tuition scholarships, and health insurance. A GRA will assist one or more faculty members with research, while enrolling in a minimum of six credits of graduate work each term. Some Research Assistantships (RAs), not including tuition, may also be available.
Years of Eligibility for Assistantships After the initial year of appointment, a TA is usually renewed annually for up to two additional years as long as the student teaching evaluations are positive and the TA is making satisfactory progress in their graduate program.
Application for Assistantships Along with other application materials, an applicant should submit a separate letter to the Director of Graduate Studies indicating his or her interest in an assistantship. Applicants for a Research Assistantship should indicate any special abilities potentially relevant to the research assistantship, such as computer skills, fluency in other languages, or interviewing experience. Students already in the program are invited to apply for assistantships in the Winter. Criteria for the selections of assistants are detailed in a later section.
