Bachelor's Degrees in Interdisciplinary Studies

As of October 1, 2007, the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies has become the Interdisciplinary Studies Program, and no additional students are being admitted.  However, current students are being served by faculty and staff and encouraged to complete their degrees.

 We offer three Bachelor's degrees, a Master's degree (MISP), and a minor in Non-Profit Sector Studies (NPS).

Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS)

This is a four-year interdisciplinary studies degree program. The curriculum focuses on historical to contemporary and cross-cultural issues in the humanities, social sciences and science and technology. The program places special emphasis on critical thought and analysis, writing ability and research skills. The course of study concerns itself with humanistic and social consciousness and science and technology literacy, and it draws upon the maturity and experience of the adult learner in the process. For graduation, the program requires 120 semester credits (including 40 semester hours of residency), with a maximum of 64 semester credits transferable from the Associate Degree level, and minimum cumulative honor point average of 2.0. Students must also fulfill University English and Mathematics Proficiency Requirements as well as General Education Requirements. Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies - Capstone Program

(Bachelor degree completion) This program is designed to help holders of two-year Associate of Applied Science degrees earn a four-year college degree. It essentially a reverse 2+2 degree since students have earned their specialized technology degree and now come to the university for two years of interdisciplinary studies. The 64 semester credit program consists of interdisciplinary education, training in fundamental skill (such as composition, critical analysis, computation and research), and also opportunities for more advanced study in areas of special interest. For graduation, the program requires 128 semester credits (including 40 semester hours of residency), with a maximum of 64 semester credits transferable from the Associate Degree level, and minimum cumulative honor point average of 2.0. Students must also fulfill University English and Mathematics Proficiency Requirements as well as General Education Requirements. Bachelor of Technical and Interdisciplinary Studies

This capstone program (Bachelor Degree program) is designed for graduates of two-year technical, vocational and professional Associate of Applied Science degree programs The curriculum builds upon the core of interdisciplinary studies courses, and it offers students the opportunity to enhance their prior professional training with advanced and theoretical work in an applied area of study from courses offered through other colleges and schools at Wayne State University. For graduation, the program requires 128 semester credits (including 40 semester hours of residency), with a maximum of 64 semester credits transferable from the Associate Degree level, and minimum cumulative honor point average of 2.0. Non-Profit Sector Studies (NPS)

This program offers course for persons to work as professionals in various non-profit organization settings. The objective of the program is to provide a quality learning experience for non-profit organization in scholarly environment and to support professionalization opportunities for non-profit organizations' leaders. The program offers a Minor in Non-profit Sector Studies for the undergraduate student and the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate for persons who have already earned a bachelor's degree.
