Lauren Henrickson-Warzynski Awarded Tapia Award
Description These remarks were made at the Graduate Student Reception by MPA program director, Dr. Jered Carr. The Jorge Tapia Award was established to honor a man who served as Director of both the MPA and MA and Ph.D programs at WSU. The award alternates between students in both programs. Eleven students were nominated this year, all of them outstanding. Lauren Henrickson-Warzynski was selected. She is an exceptional students, graduating from the program with a GPA of 3.86. She has been actively involved in research at the Center for Urban Studies in many projects and is currently working on the COMPSTAT and Midtown initiatives at CUS. These projects are directed at improving the safety and vitality of Midtown Detroit. Lauren also has an exceptional record of service. In 2005, she developed THE FREE STORE, a place for those in need to obtain clothing, food and other necessities at no cost. This program is still viable, thanks in part to Lauren's work in attaining a non-profit status for FREE CHANGE, the organization that runs THE FREE STORE. Scholarly achievement, community involvement, her excellent work with CUS. All of these combine to make Lauren an excellent recipient of the Jorge Tapia Award for 2009.
