Fixing Fragments and Run-Ons

An important part of good writing is writing sentences that flow well; having proper sentence structure aids in this. Many students are in a rush to finish a paper and therefore end up with a paper that does not convey the point the writer is trying to make because the sentence structure is not properly formatted. This can be easily avoided by stopping and taking the time to read your paper aloud, if each sentence cannot be read in one breath between punctuation then it needs to be revised. This can be accomplished by adding any punctuation mark that is appropriate or just starting a new sentence.

Example 1:

Cell phones are useful devices they can be used to contact people when emergencies arise.

Correction:

Cell phones are useful devices; they can be used to contact people when emergencies arise.

Example 2:

Where am I going I think I am lost.

Correction:

Where am I going? I think I am lost.
